1977 Ford Dipstick question

I have a 1977 ford f-250 with a 400M in it and it does not have a dipstick.. I was wondering if anybody knows where i can get one at. I cant seem to find one anywhere.. Also.. Somebody told me that the dipstick from a 351C would fit????

I usually figure that out by changing the oil. Drain the pan, then put the new stick in. Add enough oil to be one quart short and check the stick. If that's where you are it's a pretty good indicator that you're on the money. Put the rest in and check that you're at the full mark. If you did the filter at the same time you'll want to check it again after starting it.

351M and 400 are the same block, and therefore the same dipstick ... as long as both are 2wd or 4x4, IIRC. I think that perhaps the 4x4's had a dipstick tube that threaded right into the pan, whereas the 2wd ones went into a hole in the block???

351C engines had a lower deck height, and a smaller capacity oil pan, too ... as they were in passenger cars only.

There should be a Ford engineering part number, something like "D7TE-6750-AA" stamped right into the dipstick itself. Your local Ford dealer's parts department should be able to cross-reference that engineering number to a parts sales number (i.e D7TZ-6750-A) and then tell you if it is the correct dipstick for your application. An auto wrecker may also have access to interchange and application data through their Hollander manuals ...

right Rob Keller? (if you're reading this)

If push comes to shove ... and nobody is willing or able to help with this, my suggestion would be to pull the dipstick and tube from the same engine at a wrecker so that you know you have a matching combination.
