1978 El Camino Manual 4spd gearing

I've got a nice low miles 78 Elke with a 350-Edelbrock manifold/New Quadrajet, headers manual 4 speed stock from factory. I'm getting a howl from the rear end when I unload (back off throttle). If I slip it to neutral it quiets a bit, No noise on acceleration. I think I may have damaged it in a street race when I chirped into 2nd at 7 grand. That's when it started.

We'll I was thinking I might want to understand what the car came with and what I might want to put in it. Any ideas.

Might be a Saginaw. If all three shift levers are mounted to the side cover, it's a Sag. They came with one of four possible gear ratios, identifiable by the number of annular rings (if any) on the input shaft. For ID info & parts, go to: http://www.dandltransmission.com/saginaw.html
