1978 Mercury Marquis Rearend?

Does anybody know what kind of rearend came in the late 70's full size mercs? and what would cause a clunking sound from both brake drums when rocking the car side to side? everything rolls smooth without any noise or grinding. except the clunk.

Most likely a 7.5" RG. The axles are held by C-Clips at the pinion gears. If the axle bearings are good (these are pressed into the axle tube ends) and no sign of axle seal leakage (worn axle shafts at bearing surface), you may have to shim the C-Clips with stock to eliminate the excess in/out movement of the axle shafts. This procedure is described in the appropriate year shop manual.
