1979 Ford Granada Tranny acting really weird

My buddy has a 1979 Ford Granada with a 4.1L 250 and a 3 speed auto. He tells me that sometimes the car will not move forward, so he has to put it in reverse and drive backwards for a few hundred feet. Then he can put it in drive and it will be fine. He said it only does this after it has been idling for a little while. I have no idea whot could be wrong besides the tranny takin a dump... anybody have any ideas??

can he put the car down in first when it is doing this and drive. i have always heard first and reverse are the same band/gear. check out the shift cable that goes from the shifter down to the linkage. or check out the linkage itself. change the filter and fluid in the pan. i don't recommend to anyone have the transmission flushed.

i vote for shifter/linkage issue as well. hows the tranny fluid look and smell ? bright red ? dirty red ? have any smell to it other than nice trans fluid ?

linkage may be pretty worn out and in need or work/adjustment under the car. may have a pivot bushing worn out or missing especially with how old the car is.

always wondered what cars ford put the 250 L-6 into hmm..

good luck

Granada/ Monarch's, Mavericks and '70-'75 Mustangs could get them...

Granada/ Monarchs had the optional 3+1 4spd toploader known commonly as the Granada 4spd
