Chevy didn't use a 60 degree V6 in '79 (IIRC the 2.8L V6 60 degree engine came out about '81). The Chevy 90 degree V6 engines (200/229/4.3L or 262 ci) all have the distributor in the rear like the SBC engines they were derived from.

If the distributor is in the front you probably have a 3.8L Buick V6. It uses the BOP bolt pattern bellhousing. If you want to use a Chevy bolt pattern transmission behind the Buick V6 (or any BOP/Cad engine), use an adaptor like this.

As far as buying a reman 3.8L V6 to replace the one you have, I'd tend to lean towards a Chevy V8, but that's me.
