1979 th 350 3 speed automatic transmission question

hello i'm new to the site. I own a 1979 pontiac grand prix 301 v8 two barrel...horrable engine not bad if you're into cruising, but im not at. Just recently the weather changed i live in northwestern pa. So its cold in the morning now i'd say on average about 31-35 degrees. the car is sometimes stored in the garage which is not heated. the transmission now slips when cold and shifts and drives fine when warmed up. My question is what do you guys think the problem could be. The car has 119,779 miles on it. which is not bad so i don't think it needs a complete rebuild. the motor if you can call it that runs strong. I got no idea if the the transmission fluid has been changed ever cause of the lower mileage for the year it's been driven on average around 3,000 miles a year. Is there anything i can do to fix it for the time being? I'm not keeping it when spring comes because i'm buying a much newer sports car in the spring.

Have you checked the fluid level? Warmed up, in park, engine running. Does the fluid smell burnt?

Possibly the Pressure Regulator Valve is tight in the bore when cold. But, probably the Seals & sealing Rings have gotten hard with age & are leaking.

Old, hard, brittle seals. Toss a can of trans additive (ie TransMedic, TransmissionOverhaul, etc) into it to sodten up the seals. It'll only be temporary, but if that's the root of the problem, you'll know for sure. OR, let the car warm up for a decent period of time before attempting to drive it.

i always put a bottle of seal conditioner in trannies doing this, i call it old age syndrome, its pretty common especially on the old th350 trannies etc.

conditioiner usually cures it

rubber seals etc on valves etc getting old and hardening

years of heat and cold back and forth drying up hardening seals

it happens to them all eventually if not a different type of failure first
