1979 Trans Am shaker scoop question...

Hi. I have a 79 T/A with a 455 Olds in it. When I bought it, previous owner has attached the shaker to the hood. I would like to mount the shaker to the engine (like it was stock), but I know the 455 in it is taller than the 301 it came with, or even the 403 Olds that was an option.

WHat mods would I have to do to get the shaker to work with the 455. Nothin' beats watching the shaker doin' its thing.....

Is a 455 olds really taller than 403? I thought they were of the same exterior dimensions. Most 79 TA's were 403's, so finding a air cleaner base that will work shouldn't be impossible. Otherwise you could head down to the junk yard, find some olds air cleaner bases, make a plan, then measure, cut, weld. I did the latter with my TA awhile back. I fit a 403 scoop to a SBC, so it can be done.

403 air cleaner

just find you a 403 air breather assembly it will mount on the 455 it has same demensions as 403,shouldnt be hard to find at all.then mount the shaker like they did from the factory.

An Olds 455 is taller and wider than a 403, plus, the overall height of the engine will depend on which intake manifold you have.

Whoops! I forgot to say that. The intake is an Edelbrock Performer olds 455 with a 750 Edelbrock carb (elec. choke). Could I still use this intake with a 403 shaker? I really don't want to hack up a nice one to fit it stock appearing.

I'm guessing not....your two choices are to fabricate a shorter assembly, or get an adapter...Butler performance has them, but they are a bit spendy...
