Hey guys, I was on my way to the doc earlier and I passed a car forsale. It was a 1980 monte carlo not SS. It had a 406 SBC in it, TH400. I chech the #'s to be sure and the pan shape on the tranny.

The guy told me it It had coated hyperutectic pistons not forged, and said he wasn't sure about all the motor specs cuz he has someone else build all his motors for him. He did have quick release valve covers and hit had 461 camel hump heads on it. He said there had been some performance work done to the heads but was not sure what. He says the TH400 has a TCI race kit (clutches, full manual valve body, modulator gone, stage 3 kit) full spool rear end 456 gears He wasn't sure what brand though. strange axels.

He says he has all the info at home in a folder, But the car was at his shop which was where I talked to him at. Car comes with monster Tach w/ light. tras brake, 2 sets hoosier slicks 1 sets used. He showed me some 1/8 mile ET slips and the slowest one was a 7.42, but this was with a dominator 850 carb. He claims someone stole the dominator off the car sittin at his shop at night while he was at home. so he just has a eddie performer 750 on it now. It will start and run decent, but the carb on it he says is why its running kinda rough..... He has 2500 firm on it, you guys think its worth it, If he can provide this mystery folder to me??? I just think 2500 for a 7.40 car is a little too good..... is it?? the body is straight but desperately needs paint

I'd pass if it were my money.

I have enough receipts and time slips to sell about 5 cars :thumbup: I find it odd that he knows so little about the car and has a convenient excuse for why it doesn't run strong now. Most racers could tell you about every bolt in their car. It has mediocre heads, mystery internals, and a bunch of promises.

Just my opinion, only you can decide what it's worth to you.

Never heard of an 850 dominator. Seems like the owner may be confused by some other facts to - like how fast the car ran.

my thoughts too guys. He claims he's just the owner/driver and has nuthing to do with the building of it. .. but who knows, not realy worth it to me. The only thing the caught my eye was a 406. I've been lookin for a SBC 400 for several years now and anyone in my neck of the woods that has em won't part for less that a grand with no garentee of if its even good or not. kinda a crap shoot

A grand is quite a chunk for a 400. I paid 125 for my 4bolt. I assume your in Indiana?? , if so look on Craigslist for Indianapolis or what ever city they list that is closest to you. I just looked and found a 400 in running cond. in Indianapolis for $250. Plug in 400 to search.

You could be missing a good deal, 7.40 with humps and a 406 is doable esp with that gear.neighbors camaro is popping 7.72 with a 350 292h cam and double humps.and 12.5 to comp. with eddy 750 carb.If it has a 9 inch in it or 8.5 10 bolt you can get half your money back on just the rearend.Then again it could be a 305 in disguise with a miss your call and good luck with your decision either way.

I think I'd join the nay-sayers on this one. It sounds like there are too many unknowns with that engine and the rough engine may be due to some other problems the seller is hiding.

Who cares about the motor. I love 1980 Montes. Hence the name espo1980. Look the car over well. If it looks like it's in good shape, trim, body, frame, interiors are good and no rust. I'd buy it. It's a hell of a car and fun to drive. I've been driving mine for almost 14 years. It's a rare car if you ask me. Offer $2000.00!

Just thought I would add something else.....There wasn't an SS Monte in 1980. There was a v-6 3.8 turbo 231 edition. Those models had 3.42 rear end ratios and factory turbo hood scoop mounted just off center on the drivers side. Not many of those left at all, at least not out here on the eastern shore "rust country".
