1981 Chevy Monte Carlo Rearend
I have a chevy 81 monte carlo with a stock rearend, 241 rearend gears (41 ring and 17 pinion) 10 bolt cover and 10 bolt ring with a diameter of 7.5 inches. I need to change to a 410 rearend gear can I just put in a 10 pinion gear to get this or will the teeth not line up right. If you order a 410 gear you get a 41 ring gear and 10 pinion gear. Is there really a difference. Thanks for all the advice. Gary

YUP, You'll need the 3 series ring gear carrier, and BOTH gears need changed as a set.
You might be able to find the gears and carrier in an S-10 for real cheap, and it will be a direct bolt in, but the spider gears will most likely have a different tooth count (you currently have 26 and the newer ones have 28) the spider gear sets will directly interchange in the carrier, unless you want to find a set of 28 spline axleshafts too. |

I have the same rear in my 81. I used a thick set to go to 3:73 Richmond gear sells them. Not sure but I think they have a 4:10 thick set for that rear.
