1981 monte carlo????????

hey guys , just got a 1981 monte carlo,had a 229 v-6,3.8 liter,what i need to know is will a sbc 350 fit where the v-6 was ,and are the mounts the same (engine and trans ,will have turbo 350trans )any help would be great and if it wont work ,could someone tell me what i'll need to do the switch-a-roo,thanks interceptor429,keith

The V8 will bolt into your car, but you need the V8 mounts, accessory brackets and exhaust. Best bet is to find a similar V8 car and strip all the parts you need from that.

If I remember right, the TH350 will bolt in with no mods, and the only real mod to do to the engine mounts is to move them to the front-most frame bolt holes. You will probably want, as Poncho said, to look for a V8 donor car for easy parts shopping and swapping. I believe the engine mounts are the same (please correct me if I'm wrong). The fan shroud is obviously different, but the basic swap is pretty simple. Just pay attention to what you're doing and don't hack wires.

V-8 Monte Carlo

You might be surprised at the adaptability of GM motor mounts!

Why do I say that? Well, I replaced the 4.3 V-6 in my '85 Monte Carlo with a 350 using, get this, a set mounts that were pulled from an '82 pickup! The engine actually sits a bit lower in the chassis than a buddy's factory V-8 '84 Monte - and a whole lot lower than his '85 (originally a 4.3 and totally hacked ).

To be on the safe side though, I'd have to suggest finding a stock set of G or late A body V-8 mounts - just to make sure the hood still closes.

Your car should have either a TH350 or TH200 transmission already, and changing a 200 to a 350 should present no real problems.

few bad tips there

First I don't know if the motor mounts from a 6 to an 8 will fit but the rest I do know. Small block to big block mounts will fit. The tranny will not be a 350 but probably a 250. Even the 305 generally came with the 250 not the 350. You will want to go to the 350 tranny. Only modification is the rear tranny mount. You will have to reuse the 250 rear mount. The 350 mount has two bolts into the cross member and the 250 only uses one. Where the crossmember was designed for one bolt you cannot use the stock 350 mount.
