1984 350 C10 Silverado electric choke
Can someone tell me how the electric choke works? The light stays on and its obvious that the choke isn't working. I have one wire coming off of the carb at what seems to be the adjuster.
Where is that wire suppose to connect to? Also are there suppose to be other wires in other places in the truck that operates the choke?

You'll want to check the fuse first and foremost.

That one green wire should plug directly into the black "adjuster" disk (actually the choke coil cover).

i'll try to get a picture up asap.

P.S. As far as other wires controlling the choke, there may be one near the oil pressure sensor (the one near the oil filter) that may not allow the choke to turn on unless there is oil pressure, but:

a) i'm not sure
b) it doesn't matter right now
c) it's getting late and i'm getting sleepy......

When it quits raining I will get out and take a look at the oil pressure sensor and see how many wires are connected to that. With some luck, maybe I can trace where they are suppose to connect. Wiring is something I don't do very well, thus my alternator issues, but that will be another post. Have a great day.

Most likely it's the fuse first.

What light?
Take a pic of your carb.
Electric choke could run to a 12V source or thru the oil pressure sensor if so equipped.

There is a light on the dash that says "choke". It stays on when the choke doesn't seem to be working. I will post a picture of the carb soon

Check the wire at the choke cap for 12V with the ignition switch on. If no 12V then run a wire from a 12V source when the ignition is on. Could be an unfused plug in on your fuse box to use.

i mean unless the wire was disconnected at the fuse junction or wherever it starts then i think the fuse should be checked first.

What happened in my case was that the plastic clip at the end that connects to the choke cover fell off,
2) i switched carbs to one that uses a hot air choke, not an electric
3) i left the wire just hanging around there. (should have taped over the end w/ electrical tape....)
4) The wire, apparently, touched the valve cover; This was apparently too much voltage and the fuse blew.
5) i then decided to switch back to the original quadrajet, because i didn't really know what i was doing as far as swapping carbs.
6) After switching back carbs, the choke light came on and stayed on.

It was the fuse. And yes, i have an 83 c-10 which is basically identical to an 84.

I checked the voltage in the wire that runs to the choke cover and it reads really close to 12v, actually 11.88v. That reading comes from the wire being disconnected from the choke, and the voltmeter wires being connected to the choke wire and the negative side of the battery.
However what is strange, at least to me is that, when I connect the choke wire to the choke cover connector and recheck the voltage, the voltage drops down to 4v.

So far I haven't ran a straight 12v wire to the choke, however I did unplug the oil pressure sensor and that did not make a difference at all. The voltage readings did not change. I will run a single wire from a 12 v source and see what happens.

Should it be a full 12v and should the voltage at the connector drop when I connect the wire?
