1984 corvette

I got this as a hot rod 350eng. Ive hard starter problems from the start
it has a 168 tooth flexplate with teeth missing as best as I can tell the
starter looks to be too far away from flexplate I am going to replace
flexplate/fly wheel does anyone know how to close the gap between
them Summit has a thicker flexplate .035 but I don't know if its enough
the starter gear only catches about one-half of the flexplate now car has
about 400HP and I think the starter gear shaft is getting bent after some

Which way does it catch the ring gear when you say "half way" is that front to rear of the tooth width, or is it depth into the gear from top to root?

flywheel could be wider or this may sound crazy thinking of two flexplates on trans Thanks

Give yourself more credit..2 flywheels IS crazy...if it was my car,I would buy a new flywheel,re-man starter,our carquest gives a lifetime warranty[new would be better if budget is not a concern] and shim kit,all for under 100 bucks,total...I would check for a bad crank thrust bearing by checking end play in the crank before installing items..if ok,then install the flywheel,making sure its not installed backwards,install starter and shim as nessessary....and if it still sounded like a meat grinder,I would find a boating friend to buy my corvette block boat anchor...but that's just me..but really,if you do those things,it should be just fine.

Thanks for the reply I did trip over battery charger last month on fri the 13th
fell like a brick face down on concrete two black eyes bad nose bleed had
MRI the hospital/doctor said I was OK But the way I am posting I beginning
to wonder The flywheel/flex-plate may be on backwards when I got the car I don't know the car is automatic with flex-plate/flex-wheel not a flywheel it may not be as thick as a flywheel I have a old starter here like the one I ordered
It kicked out starter gear it came out 3/4" inch that may be normal going to
see if I can rent a garage lift at a guys house and pull trans broken off teeth
on one part of wheel anyway 4-5 teeth missing Thanks again for help and putting up with my craziness I will try to get my act to together I will keep posted.

Pull the inspection cover off the bottom of the bell housing, using a good bright trouble light look in there. The flex plate will be stamped part that has among other features a pressed boss (actually several) for the torque converter mounting pads and bolts to interface with. The convex (outward facing boss) is to be toward the torque converter, the relieved side (concave) toward the engine. If there is a counter weight it needs to be on the engine side. So these are indicators that show the installation in orientated correctly without having to tear half the car apart to see things. While I don;t think this is your problem there are two Chevy starter and flexplate/flywheel combinations. There is a 153 tooth flex/fly at 12-3/4 inches in diameter which uses the starter with straight mounting bolts. There is the 168 tooth flex/fly that uses the angle mount starter.

You may want to remove the starter and check whether the solenoid throws the pinion all the way to the end of the shaft that being where it strikes a spacer that provides a stop between the pinion and the starter nose housing. The length of throw can be sometimes be adjusted a little with the thickness of this spacer. You'll have to look at the nose housing, some have a relief that the spacer goes into which prevents the gear from catching in the relief, some don't. For those that don't you can reduce the spacer's thickness as long as the gear teeth clear the housing when fully extended on the shaft.

Cracking of the flexplate is sometimes a problem, if the flexplate is cracked it will move around giving starter engagements from perfectly normal to very difficult and everything in the range between. Broken welds between the flexplate and ring gear will do the same thing.

If the tooth depth that's off in the top to base of the meshed gears (clearance) if too close the starter pinion can crash or miss engagement or even find it impossible to fully engage in the front to rear depth (longitudinal direction).

Another problem if using the older big motored starter is the lack of the brace between the back side of the motor and the block. These are always a pain to install and Corvette's raise the level of frustration by a power factor or two. But without this bracket the starter wants to twist on the two big mounting bolts which twists the pinion gear sideways in the ring, binding it before it gets full engagement.

Don't forget the heat shield, another PIA to install but important to the life of the solenoid.

Thanks everyone I have a enough information for awhile I will call summit
and change the mini starter sum 829100 from 168 to 153 teeth because
it has inline 2 bolt setup ThANKS EVERYONE!

This is saltbob with 1984 hot rod corvette I can't start car with new starter
from summit the starter is fine turns out between the bad starter and a lot
of teeth missing off the flexplate/flywheel the engine won't crank long enough
to start the car, I' m planning on pulling the engine&transmission together
can anyone know which is better (longer lasting) a stock heavy flywheel
or a certain metal or grade flexplate, with a price around $100-$150 , with
350 engine, summit carb. not FI, 400HP plus Also I'm planning on towing the car to Bossier City to son-in-law home garage 200-300 miles do I need to rent a car trailer or will a car dolly work, its rear wheel positrack rive.

Hey Bob, cool Vette - the early C4 was the first giant step for Corvette becoming a world class sports car.

In general a flywheel is used with a manual transmission and has the machined surface for the clutch disc to mate with, a flexplate is used with an automatic transmission and has tabs welded on to mount the torque converter.

Since you have a high performance engine and expect to see high rpms to make 400HP with a 350, you should invest in an SFI spec flywheel or flexplate. The stock part may be adequate for street use, but any competition use would be risky (picture a half inch thick steel blade emerging from the floor board on it's way to exit the side of your car, then think about where your feet and legs are). While you have it apart be sure to service the front seal in the trans, pilot bearing in the engine, and if you have a clutch check/replace the clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing (I'm thinking that if your missing teeth, you've probably got clutch issues anyway).

As for transport, I would use a trailer, I know its not out of my pocket, but if the car isn't worth a trailer, why do all this work on it?
