1985 astro 700r4 shift problems

My 1985 astro that i think has been stood a while is acting strange, It seems fine for the 1st few minutes and changes up gears fine then its like its kicked down a gear and then a while after that its like it stays in a low gear and slips.

Any suggestions please? sorry if its been covered, i've had a look back a few pages.

Cheers Smit

one point to note is the dip stick has an end welded on it so i'm unsure how much fliud should be in there, were emptying it and cleaning the filter, does anyone know how much fluid should go back in please?

what is the history of this trans? Mileage , recent repair work?

Low oil will cause slipping. It may be causing a low pressure problem if the fluid is getting air into the system

sounds like you may have an internal seal leaking when the fluid is cold it is able to seal but when it gets hot and thinner it leaks and makes the tranny slip. I would get it overhauled

after dropping the pan and filter and letting it sit and drain for about 10-15 min it should take about 5-5.5 quarts but i would suggest getting a new dip stick 700 are picky as little as 1/2 quart other wise if it still does it after you fill it with the 5-5.5 quart and still use the old stick just add another quart if it is good get a new stick if it does the same get a rebuild
