I have a 1986 chevy monte carlo 305 with a 200r4, the car is running purely mechanical no electronics on the engine. I did a few things to give it more power but its soo sluggish and i believe its the transmissions fault, it never wants to shift right usually winding out in first gear then slamming into second and does not want to kick down to pass anything.

Tv cable was adjusted by me and a professional transmission place neither made the difference. I heard the transmission is controlled by the computer is there a way to get around this? and anything else could cause this?

No computer on 2004r, ck the gear on the gov has bad teeth or the gov is stuck

What Carb are you using now?
Have you installed a Lockup kit for the TC Clutch?

what did you do to the engine to give it more power? did you swap the toque converter at the same time to match the cam if you put another cam in? what rear gears are in the diff?
more often than not, this is a result of a big cam installed and not also installing a new higher stall converter to match the cam.
also, if the car was fine before the work was done, then odds are that the problem is related to the work done.
on the shifting of the car, if its shifting late and hard and you have no passing gear, if what i mentioned above is not related to whats going on with the trans, then it just doesnt have enough tv pressure set in the cable, or it could be a combination of both.

cam and rear are stock, no computer a edelbrock carb and headers with side pipes the tv cable seems spot on how to adjust it and even a trans place did it before with no difference and no i dont have a lockup kit

Like said before you need the proper tv cable bracket for the edelbrock carb. And the proper way to adjust them is by measuring the line pressure with a gauge. Read
