1987 Eldorado headlight & dash light

My 1987 Eldorado has a digital dash and the intensity of the display is sometimes so weak that I cannot see the speed, fuel, odometer, etc. I have the control set to the brightest. Then, without warning, the intensity will increase -- sometimes to full brightness -- and then fades again. The tach readout is on a different panel, so I know my speed by calculating my rpm -- thus avoiding the boys in blue.

I am not sure if this is linked with the dash problem, but every now and then (while driving at night) my headlights will shut off and flash back on and do this repeatedly -- it scares the life out of me and angers the guy in front of me, no doubt.

When I have the twilight sentinel on, I will sometimes get the warning that I need to turn on my headlights -- which indicates that there is a malfunction somewhere.

The (daytime/nighttime) sensor is clear of obstruction and seems to work fine most of the time, I think.

Do you know if there is a bulletin on this light problem? Any ideas of correcting the problem aside from R&R all the components?

Cadillac Man, your headlight problems are identical to my wife's 88 Eldo. I have the service manual and have talked with a "good" Cadi mech. The easiest and most likley fix for this is the dimmer switch, a real rube godberg affair. Your panel light poblem could be related since they will dim when your head lights are turned on, but they also get a signal from the daylight sensor as well as the brightness control switch.. You can get parts from an 86 or 87 Eldo or Seville at the junkyard to swap parts out. The 88 Eldo and Seville are electronically a one off year and will not work.
