1988 caprice trans ???

hi i have a 1988 capric classic and i dont know if it has a 700r4 or a 200r4 trans.. all of the id tags are off the car . it has a 305 in it but it isnt original , i think the trans is original and the rearend is a 10 bolt .. some numbers on the trans are M38 and a 7 in the middleof the trans
can anyone help???

It's aftermarket, but thats the shape of a 2004R pan.

700R4 has a square pan.

There should be a sticker on the door jam or inside ledge of the door or in the glove box door that has several codes accross the bottom one will be paint, and another will say trim and should be a trans. Get the leeters listed under that and your local chevy dealer should be able to tell you which trans your car came with... hope that helps let me know if you come up "0" there post again and I'll do some digging.

u may want to recheck what a 2004r and a 700r4 look like... they do NOT have the same pan... the pics above are from a 2004r, and the pic below is the pan from the 700r4 in my car...
