1989 4l60( 700r4) shifts from 2nd to neutral

I have an 1989 4l60 (700r4) and from time to time it shifts from 2nd gear in what i would describe as neutral. I have rebuilt the transmission and it has parts of a B&M shift kit and a Transgo shift kit in it. 95 percent of the time it functions just fine, shifts quick and hard through all gears. When i do have any problems it is the 2-3 shift and my foot is in it, i'd say at least 80 percent throttle. All i do to fix it is i let my foot off the gas and it slips into gear and away i go. It tends to have problems more often when it's cold. I'm not overly concernd about it, but i'd like to fix it. Kinda make me feel like an idiot when i go to pass someone and it shifts into neutral and just revs the engine haha

If anyone has any ideas or suggestion i'd like to hear them.

Had the same problem. It's not neutral, there not enough fluid to operate the servo.
When I installed my trans I filled it with fluid. Running Hot.
Apparently I wasn't very careful because when I had the shifting problem you describe I rechecked the fluid.
When I added (1-1/2) quarts, it shifted OK.

3-4 clutch pack on its way out? - inspect the trans fluid, what colour - does it smell burnt?

Vicrod: Fluid level is good now, i've check it several times (I have had problems from being low on fluid before but the charaterisics were much differnt.) If any thing i would say that is on the higher side.

Eliot mansfield: Fluid is the cleanist that i've seen it, and does not smell burnt.

Other thoughts:
And the filter is clean and seated correctly ?
Correct filter for depth of pan?
only one o-ring around the neck or inside the pump inlet?

Get yourself a pressure guage and compare main line pressure and 3rd gear pressure via the test ports [at the point when the problem occurs]. I use a std guage from a compressor with correct fittings.

Is seated correctly. Possibly not the cleanist. How would this effect only third?

This one i don't know either way for sure. But sounds as if it would cause more problems then just this?

As far as the guage goes, i'd like to set one up sometime. Only conflict i have is since it only happens ever once in a while i'd have to fluke to have this problem with the guage hooked up.

Recently i haven't had any problems with it. Actually not once since my orginal post (over a month ago). Just to give you an idea of the frequency and the irregularity of it

Do you think that there is possibly a valve sticking in the valve body or something along this line.

reason for asking about filter related stuff, is just wondering if its getting starved of oil at high rpm's and at a point where it needs good clamping pressure for the 2-3 change. Ive got a pressure guage connected to the main line tap permanently - just something I like to see.
Given the intermittant nature, its going to be quite hard to track down.

Thanks eliotmansfield,

I know i haven't responded for a while, but i've learned a little more about the problem know
I'm starting to think that is more along the lines of the filter like you say.

However, What i've noticed now is that, i can go full out in D and have no problems, but when its in OD, and the revs get up there is when the problem comes back.
Possibly the way it routes the fluid in D, stop it from starving?

I'll have to do a fluid and filter change and see where that gets me.

I guess I have to go with the information gathering guys. I would not think you could feel free in a big RR to put in guages-. but nothing like permanent guages. Some monitor the areas they work most in or most familiar with. If they are there full time you learn what happens in all circumstances- then you will know when something changes. Analog guages not digital leds. I had a Gmc truck years ago,ocassionally it would get hot . stuck a temp guage sensor in the hose out of the thermostat. Once in a while I would get a big temperature needle jump, even out , then in a while the engine would over heat, The needle jump was a steam bubble passing over the sensor. By being there, I could predict overheating and watch the other things that were happing as it progessed to the point of overheating. I have forgotten what was wrong, But not the lesson,Got a problem Make a plan on how to solve it. just a word. mark
