1989 chevy camaro 355 twin turbos, nitrous, megasquirt ems

heya everyone, im not exactly new i had an account years ago but have since forgotten my login info

figured i would share my 89 irocs twin turbo build with u guys

this what the car looked like the day i got it

the car originally had an tpi l98 motor which somone swapped for a carbed 70's motor ( ugh dam ppl)
the install was totally hacked , they even put the fuel line directly to the carb with no regulator. it was just dead headed to the efi fuel pump. how the car even ran is beyond me

then they hooked up the return line to the main vacum feed on the bottom of the carb

i bought the car knowing i was going to turbocharge it so this wasnt all that much of an issue to me

the first step was to strip her down and fix all the main issues with the car

first up pull the factory ecm and harness they had left in the engine bay

and then remove anything non essential to the build and gernerally just make heads and tails of the mess

once i got it stripped down i bought a used tpi system to put the car back to fuel injection

my 32x12x4 inch air to air intercooler core

3 inch charge pipes and couplers

at first i was going to go single turbo and this is what i had bought

reman t6 tv7512 turbo
76mm compressor wheel and 87mm turbine wheel
this turbo would have supported around 800 hp flywheel

and this is it all cleaned up

this is the location i had picked out for the single turbo originally but lack of room for the 5 inch downpipe and crossover tubing had me abort the single turbo install, besdies the fact i wanted more power then the t6 turbo was capable of

dont mind the temp brackets that are holding the intercooler in place
but as u can see that massive a/a intercooler fits up in the nose very nice.
it does require some cutting off the hood latch support bracket though

some blending of the throttle body inlets and polishing

got really sick of the dirty engine bay so i stripped everything i could out and hit it with black paint

at some point prior to this the heads and tpi intake got some much needed attention with the die grinder

at this point i had sold off the t6 turbo and purchased a set of t3/t4 hybrid turbos .63 ar turbins with 57mm compressors
this pair of turbos will support just shy of 1200 flywheel hp

heres a pic of those when i was mocking up the locations for them

so its time to fab up the headers.
i decided on a log style header so i ordered up a flange set from summit
and 8 weld els and went at it with my cheap flux core mig

those were toped off with 2.5 inch tube to finish the logs
and i finilized the ds header and wastegate placement

with just enough room to get a 2.5 inch downpipe past the steering and master cyl/proportioning valve

then the passenger side

had to notch the lower rad support to get my 2.5 inch charge pipes form the turbos to the intercooler to fit

and the 2.5 inch merge i made to merge both turbo outlets into a single 3 inch pipe

and as most of us do i hate using stainless braided hose for all the lil pokes and splinters u get from assembling them.
so for an alternative i went with fragola pushloc fittings with parker pushloc hose

this is my first time ever using pushloc stuff and i will say i will never use standard braided stainless hose again unless i have to

tfabbing up the charge pipes form the turbos to the intercooler

gauge and switch panel for inside the car

the oil drain system

i need to get the rest of the pics off the camera and resized and posted but i fired the car up for the first time today

as for some of the stuff i didnt go over

the engine is a 0010 block with a factory forged crank
its .030 over with 9.2-1 cr
ported 882 heads
edelbrock cam at this time but its comming out for a 224/224 cam next spring

the fuel system consists of dual areomotive 340LPH fuel pumps
tunning is handled via the megasquirt 2 running extra code
also not pictured is the car has a 2 stage nitrous system

it is setup to start spraying a 25 shot .250 of a second after i come off the launch control/antilag button . and then sprays an additional 75 shot down track in high gear

if theres any part of the build u would like to see that isnt pictured or have any questions on it just ask

im expecting 1000+ flywheel out of this setup or damn close to it
a very similar combo
the only differences are
i have +5 ci
my turbos are 57mm instead of 50mm
and my heads are slightly better
has made 875rwhp @ 21 psi and has run 9.37 @ 149 ( not sexactly sure on the mph but i can check)

my goal is to crack 8.99 with the car come this spring

still on the todo list is

install 10pt cage
do the suspension
get sfi balancer and flywheel
and fab the parachute mount

actually i shoudl have boost by 2800 rpms with this setup, i will be launching with full boost though. the megasquirt has a launch control feature.
ill set it up so at 2,500 rpms it starts to retard the ign timing to 10adtc*
this will bring the egt's up wich will spin the turbos up faster.
at 2,900 rpms the system will start droping spark alowing raw fuel into the headers, this combined with the really late spark will ignite in the headers and immediately spin the turbos up.

ive used this system on many of my builds and it works great.

on my v6 car i can spin up a 60mm turbo to 15 psi @ 2,500 rpms in less then 2 seconds

1) i'm confused----i thought the gm tpi system was throttle body not multi point?

2) So in general, is flux core wire welding on the exhaust ok or should we look at mig with the gas or even tig?
