1990 chevy truck.,3 700R4's (same problem)

Im helping a friend put his 1990 chevy trk on the road.5.7 /w 700R4 He purchased the truck about a month ago for $500.00 lucky bas*!&#, anyway it runs good but wont shift to 3rd gear.shifts 1st to 2nd very smooth, tries 3rd but then slips into neutral or between gears.the TV cable is not OEM it has a cable adjuster on it. I replaced the TV cable, installed new fluid and filter, no luck! At this point Im thinking 3rd gear is shot so we headed for the junkyard...3 times I installed new front & rear seals, filter and fluid in transmissionS...all of them shift EXACTLY the same way. Is this coincidence, bad luck ,or am I missing something?

Welcome to Hotrodders.com Glad to have you with us

I think the third gear 3/4 clutch pack is burnt up, a common problem on the 700r4
PS why don't you take one of those transmissions & re build it, look for one from 88 up, their not difficult to do with a manual &/or video

yes you are missing something. Junk yard transmissions. Sounds like all the trans have the same problem.

As mentioned the 3-4 clutch pack is a problem area for a few decades in the 700r4 trans design
Dont worry how old you are... it is the mileage on your body that adds up.

Thanks for all the attention to my thread. I was afraid that if anyone responded to this little problem they would confirm what I already secretly believed, and crosley and richard s. 3rd did...umm thanks? (just kidding) In response to richard the 3rd, I wanted to rebuild the 1st tranny, but my friend (his name is also richard by the way) couldnt afford the kit when we started this little project, I told him that he already payed for it in tranny fluid, filters & seals at this point +$130 bucks w/30 day warranty for junkyard tranny. He will be getting a kit this next go-around and no... Im not going to charge him for that either. Thanks again guys & happy hotroddin.
