1991 chevy rearend?

I have a 1991 chevy silverado, 1500, automatic 350 motor, 4x4, short bed. I am having problems with what I think is the reared. When I shift the truck into gear there is a noise coming from the rearend that sounds like metal grinding. The reason I think it isn't the tranny is because its brand new. Any ideas?

If the truck is not moving when it's making this noise then it can't be in the rear end. The only thing you will hear from the rear end when you put it in gear and the truck is sitting still will be a clunk when the gears hit together. The rear end will not make any more noise until it starts moving. If you are hearing a grinding noise when the truck is sitting still then it must be in the transmission.

I would suggest another person look under the truck as the driver sits there with the brakes applied , transmission in gear , truck making noise.

Do not get under the truck , only look, see if the drive shaft is turning
