1991 Chevy truck AC/vent type popping noise

THis is wierd..............If everything on AC control is off and I hit the REC button, this popping noise goes away. It does at all other times, regardless of heat, def, AC, top vents, center or floor. THe sound is down low, towards heater core, but again, the only thing that makes the popping noise quit is hitting the REC button.............any ideas on what this is? THanks

Other than the noise do the controls seem to function properly? If not, there is an electronic actuator that operates an air door that switches between heat and AC. The actuator is a small motor that drive a gear set and a rheostat. I have seen the gears strip out and make the noise you are describing. The actuator is about $60 and is in the center behind the dash. You must remove the glove box to get to it.

Doc here,

Check the heater motor for junk that has fallen inside it from the defrost vents..this usually is the first culprit of "weird noises"..

Broken air diverter doors are common on those and will make strange noises. May be when you hit the recirculate button it is redirecting air flow away from the broken door so the noise stops

Doc here,

Pull the Heater motor FUSE, and run the controls through their paces..

If the noise goes away, it's probably junk..If it stays it may be doors or vents..
