1991 Escort 1.9 will not start

My brother's 1991 Escort 1.9 will would not start yestarday. It would almost start but it shut down a few seconds later,so we called a tow truck to bring the car to our house.

At home I sprayed carb cleaner in the throttle body, would not start, so is not a fuel problem and I pulled all spark plugs and they smell like gas. The starter and battery is good they were checked at an Murrays Auto store. The Alternator was installed last year( same alternator was fix). My dad and I think the problem is around the ignition system. I looked at the Crankshaft pulley and it moves along with the s. belt.

Another question is there a way to test a Alternator?

The 2 most common no start problems on Escorts are timing belts
and ignition control modules!

Nut, you really should try this in the engine forum as I think you would get a better response. Did you check for spark? You are aware that these engines are notorious for slipped/broken timing belts? Check one of the plug wires for spark and let us know.
