1991 GMC 1500 gear ratio change?

okay guys, been thinking of changing my rearend ratio for a while, pretty sure i have a 3.42 in 91 gmc 1500. want to set this truck up specifically for cruisin. dont need good take off or nuthin. it has 5.7 v-8 with 700r4. was wonderin if it was worth my time to drop to 3.08 or possibly 2.73 in this truck. just lookin for mileage and dont want a 4 cyl. i like my truck. thanks

I take it this is a 2-wheel drive, What size rear tire are you runing? The 3.42 is a pretty good all around gear IMHO.

Don't go too far or you won't be able to use overdrive any more. If you lug the engine too much your mileage might get worse. The 3.42 is a good ratio with overdrive. You might try a taller tire first.

mine has got noise in it, and i've found one local salvage with 3.08 GU4 code. as this seems to be the same set up, 350 with 700r4 and $250 bucks with 78k miles. thanks fellas

The 3.08 would probably work fine. I wouldn't go to the 2.73.
