I have a 1992 Dodge Dakota LE 5.2 w/318. It stops shifting into 3rd gear (I'm assuming thats overdrive) after the tranny warms up. And until the tranny warms up when it does shift into 3rd gear its a little hard. It works great until it warms up. Could this be a transmission solenoid? Or could it just be needing a filter and fluid change? And if the solenoid is the problem is it hard to change? The speedometer works, its right on the money.

well, provided that its truly 3rd gear thats its not getting and not o.d., it is not controlled by a solenoid like o.d. is on this trans. (should be a 518)
how many miles are on the vehicle? whens the last time any maintenance was done on the trans?

We put the used tranny in last year. Was told there was only about 80,000 miles or so on it. Unsure if its 3rd or just OD. When I take of from a still stop its the third time of shifting I am talking about around the speed of 47 to 50 MPH when it shifts. The second shift is at 45 MPH.

ok, well i can tell you right now depending on how much pedal your giving it, the 2nd shift is a bit late. with a light throttle (around 15-20%) your shift speeds should roughly be around 15-20 for the first shift, 25-35 for the second shift.
the 3rd shift your talking about, does the shift feel the same as the previous 2? or is it more of a surge, than a shift?
and last, is there a 2 or 3 wire connector on the driver side of the trans just above the neutral switch?
