1993 GMC sonoma 2.8L swap or rebuild ?

I need some help! I have a 1993 GMC Sonoma pick up with a 2.8 liter V6, 5 speed tranny. It will be replaced soon but I need more power! I pull a boat with it and there are a lot of hills and mountains around here! I don't fish enough to warrant a new payment book so what do I put in the truck? A swap that is parts compatible to the 2.8L? Do I put Hi-Perf. parts in the 2.8L? Someone tell me the smart solution to getting more power without having to change everything from the tranny to the rear end. Can I use headers w/o any trouble? I am going to go the economical route but will have installed what works best. The body will be painted afterwards so this will be a complete restore on the truck. Thank you very much !

If I were you I would do anything that I could to get that 2.8 out from under the hood of your truck. A small block is a common replacement and fairly easy to do and a 4.3 came stock in those trucks and should have gobs more power than any 2.8 I have ever seen. I didn't know they still offered a 2.8 in 1993 i thought they discontinued that................

Heres several links for you
60 degree v6 Performance parts

Weber carb conversion

Putting a Camaro/Firebird 3.4 in place of a 2.8 is a common mod (probably what i would do in your case)

Or if you decide to go V8 you should find a TBI 350 or 305 to put in.

I would go with a small block but if you really want to keep the 2.8 they do make a supercharger for it you could look it up or you could put in a 4.3 your choice. I would go with a carbed 305.

1993 GMC sonoma 2.8L swap or rebuild

A friend of mine and I have replaced the 2.8 with the Camaro 3.4 and have been really impressed with the added power and reliability. Of course this is an easy direct replacement. We used the TBI from our 2.8s along with the intake manifold. There is a mod to put the MFI in the system in also, but with our vehicles we were looking for cheap and reliable. The bell-housing on my 5 speed was removable so the 4.3 probably would have been nearly as easy to put in, and obviously more cubes is more power. Another friend has put a 350 in his S-10 and been tickled with it, but there were some mods he had to make to get it in, like new motor mounts. As for the rebuild, I personally wouldn't because of the anemic power and the cost of the rebuild could get you a lot stronger engine going the swap route. Good luck.

GM offers a 3.4L HT (high torque) v6 (history... 2.8L to 3.1L to 3.4L to 3.5 and 3.9L) in its speed parts catalog

Dump the 2.8 and put a 4.3 in that 93 Sonoma. Even though I am a Ford and Chrysler guy, I have total respect for those 4.3 GM engines.
