I plan to swap a 1994 4.3 L V-6 into another vehicle and I need help with alternator wiring--
First, does the main computer control the alternators field or is the alternator a "stand alone" part?
Second , if the field control is entirely internal, what do the four pins on the connector wire to.
Said another way, what is the least wiring I can do to get this alternator to work
Some vehicles actually do control the alternator output with the ECU to minimize load on the engine and maximize mileage. The CS130 does have this capability, but I don't think it is used on your 94 S-10. In any case, Google CS130 wiring diagram and you'll see that only two of those four pins are needed to operate the alternator.
First, THANKS very helpful.
The above reply leads to a schematic showing a "generator" lamp or 50 to 500 ohm resistor connected to the "L " terminal -- Any idea what the current in this path is so I can calculate the resistors wattage rating?
I tested my alternator in a bench test setup with the shaft driven by my metal lathe at 1200 rpm.
The L terminal (brown wire) was connected to Battery + with an incandescent panel lamp in series.
The F terminal (pink/black wire) was connected to Battery +.
The alternator power terminal was connected through a series amp meter to Battery + also. The case was connected to Battery neg.
The ammeter showed less than 400 milliamps (under a half amp) even with a major (20 amp) DC motor load placed across the battery terminals.
Was the test speed too low or do I have a bad alternator or voltage regulator?
Thanks for all the help so far, I'm learning ! Please give me another nudge in the correct direction.
