1995 chevy 2o van 4.3 6 cyl
trying to set the timing with no TDC mark .also my oil was very thick and dirty we just had 3 days of minus 8 degree weather so would that be why the oil was so thick

I set the timing on my '86 4.3 liter all the time by listening to the motor. Loosen up the clamp and turn it to the right till it starts to run bad, then turn it to the left till it starts to run bad, then just center between those two and she's pretty well timed. As you drive, listen for spark knock and if you hear it, just back off the timing some more. Also dirty thick oil sounds like its not been changed in a while. Change oil and filter
