1996 chev 4x4 truck with 4L60E Shift problems

I have a 1996 chev 4x4 truck with a 4L60E transmission. The transmission shifts hard and late from first to second and does not shift into overdrive. It does not give any trouble codes. Is there a good possibility that my problem is with the throttle position sensor or am I wasting my time with that? If so, where else should I be looking? Any help would be appreciated.

i doubt it is the TPS

this trans does not shift to 3rd or 4th gears?

Reverse works correctly?

High mileage on the trans ? if you know

The transmission shifts into third and drives good in third, it does not slip at all. I dropped the oil out and changed the filter all is clean, and reverse works well. It just shifts late and hard from first to second and then it just stays in third on the highway. To the best of my knowledge there are 50 to 60000 miles on the tranny.

your comment on the late 1-2 shift and no comment on the 3rd gear shift timing.

Regardless of that , if there is no 4th gear, first thought I have is the 2-4 band is the problem. The servo for the 2-4 band is a multi stage unit. I have seen a trans have 2nd gear and no 4th.

The late shift to 2nd gear is odd, unless the trans is skipping 2nd gear and shifting 1 - 3

A hard shift to 2nd gear can be a broken accumilator spring, a separator plate that has worn through at the check ball area.

The transmission shifts first to second late and hard (not until almost 5000 rpm on regular driving) shifts into third fine and then wont shift into fourth. It runs fine in third then and never does try to upshift from there. The main reason I asked about the throttle position sensor was that when I was searching online through troubleshooting on 4L60E trans one problem said late and hard first to second shift and possibly no fourth gear check TPS.

A TPS sensor that far out of parameters would normally set a DTC and the check engine lite - message would be 'on'

Perhaps not in this situation.

A good quality scanner that displays live data stream is needed to watch the TPS and other inputs the computer of the vehicle is reading
