1996 chevy z 71 which automatic transmission type?

I am in need of some information I am in the process of buying a 96 chevy z 71 has a 5.7 liter I do not know if it is a 4 l 60 e or the 700 r 4 the problem is the battery seems to die and when the battery starts to die you lose third and fourth gear in the transmission this is a transemission problem or is it a electrical problem?

Welcome to Hotrodders.com

I edited the thread title to give the members an idea what the subject question is.

A 1996 1/2 ton GM truck would have the 4L60E trans. Problems with the electrical system will cause troubles with the power train.

I would get the battery problem sorted out and go from there with the transmission.

Out of curiosity , do you know how many miles on the transmission?

Problems with the 3-4 clutch pack is common on the 4L60E trans
