1998 Escort ZX2 Tranny Slip.

Hey everyone. My brother called me today and told me that he is having issues with his 1998 Escort ZX2 with the 2.0L Dual Overhead Cam engine and automatic transmission. He is saying that while he is accelerating or sometimes just driving regularely his car will all of a sudden act as if it's in neutral. It will rev really high but not go anywhere just coast and then it will all of a sudden take again. I told him I think it's his transmission slipping. The tranny fluid looks really bad and I know it hasn't had a tranny filter change in that thing since he's gotten it. Could it be as simple as that? When I drop the pan, what are some things I should look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just read this on another internet site. Could this be true? It makes mne affraid to take the pan off and looking inside the tranny.

"If your vehicle has high mileage (> 80,000 miles) and the transmission has not been maintained, I would not recommend replacing the fluid and filter. The fluid that has been in the transmission all this time has become dirty and gritty. This gritty fluid is actually providing needed friction for the worn internal parts of the transmission. Changing the fluid and replacing the filter would remove this friction that the internal transmission parts have become dependent on. If you have not been regularly maintaining the transmission throughout the life of the car, you might actually be doing more harm than good if you replace the transmission fluid at this point. For example, putting new clean slick transmission fluid in an older high mileage vehicle could cause the transmission to slip. "

no changing the fluid and filter is not bad and should be done as preventave maintance im not a fan of flushing a trans like the quick oil changes do but over time wear from clutches and bushings get in the filter. if your having internal damage changing the filter isnot going to help in your case its worth a try the zx2 tranny is weak and expensive try new fluid filter and lucas trans additive also to remove the pan u have to remove the crossmember soak it with pb blasters
