1999 ford truck egr valve trouble
My son has a '99 ford pickup with a 4.6 litre engine that has an EGR problem. He's had it checked twice by a diagnostic computer and both times it said the problem is the EGR valve. He tells me it is somehow affecting the shifting of the tranny. He's in Florida and I'm in NY and he is driving home soon and wants to fix it to get home. What has to be done to change it? He read a manual that told him that some things have to be cleaned before installing the new one , but it didn't say what. Is there anybody who knows how or what has to be done to change it?

Is the check engine [service engine] light on. Most scan tools just say the problem is the egr system which has a lot more to it than just the valve. Ford's are bad about having dpfe sensors and egr vacuum solenoid problems. The valve is probably gummmed up but the dpfe sensor or those pesky little vacuum hoses that connect it are usually at fault. I work at a Ford dealership and sell tons of dpfe sensors.Ford knows they have a problem with them but don't really have a cure for it. Cleaning the valve with parts cleaner should help him get home but I would take it to a dealer when he gets home.
