no ! 1k is useless over bare metal. unless you are doing a complete lacquer job there is no place for it period. and lacquer does not mean clear coat. it is a type of paint no longer used here.

"the paint i will be using is ppg dulon midnight black and will be cleared"

just google 'ppg dulon paint', I don't think that is what you want to use after that much work, it's not their premium line of paint.

"i am currently restoring my 78 hz holden kingswood and am planning on taking it down to bare metal."

Why? nothing sticks like factory primer.

"can i use the dulon 1k primer/filler over the bare metal?."

Yes you can BUT only if you wish to re-do the job every year. It's your time.

I would really suggest moving up to any 2K system from start to finish.

It IS cheaper but it'll cost you in the long run...we used that stuff many years ago but we used etching primer first for better adhesion..I'd use an epoxy primer after stripping...its not That expensive and will last much longer...you'll be a lot happier...most of us do our bodywork on top of the epoxy...

I have to believe that you really don't want to re-do your work - ever until you want to do a new color. Pleeeeze - do it with current materials. Yes it will add some NZ dollars now, but at least you will only do it once. Epoxy primer - a good name brand - whatever is available in NZ. Here, most of us like the SPI, but the DuPont or Nason will work well, both are tough as nails and aren't a sanding primer. The PPG - do a search here and you will find that it isn't liked by most.
