Why a Quadrajet? It`s a spread bore carb, the small primary`s make for high velocity, which gives killer throttle response and off idle torque. When WOT is needed, the huge secondary`s are there to supply all that`s needed.
Quadrajets are a air dam carb, they only feed it what the engine asks.
You can use any carb you want. But if I were shooting for torque and economy I`d use a Quadrajet. Any carb will work as carbs aren`t really all
that complicated. Stick something on it that`s easiest for you in around the 600 to 650 range and you`ll be fine. For most, the Quadrajet is the most misunderstood carb out there, and it works no different than any other carb, it just has a few more pieces.

Im not ditching the quad idea all together i just like to know why one is more beneficial than the other so when people ask why i do things i dont look like an idiot hahaha. I have heard good and bad things about them like no one can rebuild them right and no one can tune one but when they are right they are reliable and good on gas. Ive just been one of the many folks that have never had a good one and hate them but im always willing to give someting another chance. Well thanks guys I have a pretty good idea on what im trying to build and what i can expect to get out of it. Cant wait to get this short bus rolling haha.

I actually agree with the swirl port heads or "baby vortecs" some people call them make sure your intake with bolt up to the heads, use a cam like this 204/.214 , 420",442" (edelbrock performer) the summit cam has a narrower lsa i believe they are ground like 108 but I could be wrong you would want like 112 lsa 11/2 in headers would be great as far as carbs I've literally ran all three and liked 'em but that should be all ya need Bro!
