Post 2.73 to 3.23? how much of a gain will i feel

i have a 3400lb street car with a 440ci/about 490hp with a set of open 2.73 highway gears (i know, its stupid set up). the trans is an automatic 727 with a stock converter and a b&m shift kit (new valve body with higher shift points and heavy duty clutchs and other dirve parts). im using big, crappy, beater tires on 15X6 rims (40 psi) for less fricion.

i know i must gain something when switching from 2.73 open to 3.23 limited-slip, but how much HP gain will i feel about? this sounds dumb but i think you should get the idea. how much more "umph" if you know what i mean.

also, how will this affect my gas milage? i get about 11-14 mpg now on the highway (thats pretty damn good if you ask me!) and i like it that way. this is my daily driver to college and money is tight so i need all the gas i can get. where did i get the rear then? some one GAVE me a whole rear from a super bee but thats another story. if the gas wont change to much (9-12 mpg is good), i think ill switch now. if now, ill wait till the summer.

please help
dave

The gear chance will help a little, but not maybe enough to spend money on.At 60mph your engine is turning about 2000 rpm which is better for economy. It would be nice to have an OD trans so you could run 3.55's or higher and still have a low rpm for the highway. Is your engine cammed up pretty good?

The 2.73-3.23 gears swap will yield about 18% more rear wheel torque, it's noticeable, and if your motor has good low-end power, and you are not drag racing, that's a good number. Your highway rpm will go up 300-400rpm, on average.

Do it! If the rear end was free, I wouldn't hesitate! I changed from a 2.56 to a 3.23 and it made a significant difference. Sure, I would rather have a 3.55 or a 3.73, but 3.23 is a nice all around gear for highway and town.
