Um, splayed caps may require saddle machining and for sure machining of the caps themselves, the Milodon's I have required a .003 clearance on the outer flanges when seated in the saddles, and it will require line honing at a minimum, possibly line boring. the tab for mine, using my caps was about $800. Maybe blame the high cost on Alaskan prices, I don't know.

caps

I would doubt you could get the entire job done for $250.

Maybe if you put the caps on your self ,knowing what your doing you may get the line bore hone done for $300..

I charge $150 just to put the caps on.

I have to farm out the line bore/hone because i am not equipped to do it.

Are you going to install them your self??? If not i would assume that they will charge for installation. Also every conversion i have done needed line bored first, then honed. Does that 225 include the line bore also???

If so that is one cheep shop.

remember, the splayed main caps only strengthen the main caps from walking/moving, there are many more variables that make a block "strong": amount of core shift, high nickel content, blueprinted:deck height, lifterbore, cylinder wall thickness and finish, ect...... All these factors can help the engine "strength"

Tell us the intended purpose of the engine. Street, race, etc. What vehicle? What transmission? Give these guys all the info and you will get more detailed advice.

A stock block can only withstand so much stress, with or without good caps. Whether they are splayed or stock cast 4 bolt caps. You just have to decide where you are going with your build, and what your true expectation is for its longevity. The weak link is the block, whether its a high nickel content one or not. A good aftermarket block is a pricey purchase, but might be more necessary for your application than trying to push a stock block too far....even with better caps!
