2 part ?/388 stroker

! anyone using VTO orange valve seals have trouble w/ them splitting "vertically" ? I have had to replace 9 in 8000 miles, heads were[new at the time] brodix ik200. Guides feel tight
2 Fired up the engine to warm it up to change oil, usually I do this after a ride but didn't have time, cranked up the idle to 1500 ,by the time I had operating temp [180] the first foot of the headers was glowing dull red. So ,too much fuel? not enough timing, product of cam overlap? never noticed this before , just curious, cam is FT hyd. 232/234@ .050 -.490 lift . Initial timing -14* 34 total all in by 2000, no vac adv.

383 problems

1. Have you checked valve retainer-valve seal clearance at full lift?

2. Every engine I've had on the dyno showed high EGT's at fast idle with no load on the engine. I think whats happening is; A) the timing isn't at full advance, B) the carb is almost closed and not flowing enough air to make the boosters flow fuel and you have a lean condition. Both these conditions will cause high EGT's. By the way when you load the engine and open the throttle to maintain rpm the EGT's will come way down.

Next time try this: start the engine and crank the timing up to 50*. The headers should run cooler. They may still glow but not as bad. Don't run the engine at that timing. Crank it back to 34-38*.

Glowing headers = very retarded timing. or huge vacuum leak or both.

Brodix IK200 valve seals torn . retainer to seal lift clearance. Call Brodix if they assembled the heads.

If not Factory assembled, strip them down and check retainer bottom to seal/guide boss top clearance.
wrong diameter seals for guide diameter.

Timing tab is out of wack. That cam wants way more than 14deg initial.

Is this 232-234 @.050" .490" cam on a 106 or 108 LSA?

26 initial base timing 10deg advance curve, 34-36 total. fix the distributor advance curve and fix the timing tab for true TDC.

14deg is not enough

If I were to run initial timing that high, I wouldn't be able to get the idle down to a reasonable level, carbs are almost closed at 1000 rpm, lobe center is 108 . thanks for reply's. Valve retainer clearance is Over .100 [quick measurement]

well the lack of idle spark advance really make the exhaust run hot.

The fuel burns in the exhaust instead of in the combustion chamber when the timing is not high enough at idle.

Take the carbs off and reset the secondary throttles opening.
They may be open too far at idle.

FT=FLAT TAPPET . Secondaries adjusted down to just where they won't stick closed ,pri. are maybe 1/2 turn open [idle speed screw] idle emulsion screws out about 3/4 turn , runs excellent, was just curious about " real hot pipes" .
