200-4r....How much can it handle?

Ok so I have been harrassing the guys in the engine forum for quite a while now trying to get my 283 rebuild just right. While I don't have the thing completed just yet, (rotating assembly still at the machine shop), I begain to wonder about my transmission. The motor that I am building is putting up 310 HP and 350 Ft/lbs when I put it through the desktop dyno program.

I have seen some information about how much power certain transmissions can handle, and realized that I haven't even taken this into account. My transmission is a 200R4 and is completly stock. I've done nothing to it but change the fluid a few times. My application is a circle track stock car and with my current gearing I could see 6500-7000 RPM at the top end.

So the question is, will I blow the bejeasus out of the transmission or can it handle the power as is?

The 200R4 was used in the Turbo V6 Buicks making tons of power on boost. It was also standard on the SS Monte Carlos ... lots of rodders use them behind reasonably strong 350 Chevrolet engine SO ... you should be OK ...

how much

Bull 81073, will you need to run this trans in 2nd gear to achieve your desired final drive ratio?

Years ago I ran a 3/8 asphalt track, in a semi stock class. We could only get a 4.10 ring and pinion in our stock diff housing, so we had to run a THM 350 in 2nd gear.

If you have to do this to achieve your final drive ratio, you will, how did you put it, blow the bejeasus out of it, in my opinion.

This is a near 3/8 mile dirt track, so a lot of tire slip and sideways driving out of the corners. My rear diff is around a 2.73 and I was running in 1st gear last year. (I would shift up to second on days when the track was really fast) I was planning on running in 2nd since this motor is making well over twice the torque of the olds 307 that's in the car right now.

So, you think it won't hold up then? Is there something I can do to beef it up or do I scrap it in favor of something else? I have access to a TH 350 that needs a seal put in it...

Woah now! With all the parts for the 200R4 on that site I could wind up paying for several new tannnys! Now that I see all of what is avaliable, what do you recommend that I upgrade? In other words what are the most common failure points and where will my money be most effectivly spent?

2004r

Bull, if it were me, I would run the thm 350 in 2nd gear, just change your final drive ratio to optimize your setup.

Better yet, if you can run a high enough, numerically speaking, rear gear, run the th350 in 3rd gear.

This way the trans will not be in reduction, it will be faster and the trans will run cooler and last longer.

It's going to depend on how far you want to go as far as a rebuild,I would put in the Trans-Go shift kit for sure, the only weak link in a 200R4 or 700R4 is item #26(Sun gear shell) You will find the 200R4 has a lower 1st gear than a 350 Turbo which will give you a quicker take off running in second gear after that should be a gimme.

My transmission guy gave me this response when asked: "Boat Anchor!" and "Sacrificial Anode!"
