200-4R Question

I am currently installing a 200-4R into a 70 GMC pickup behind a stock 350. I bought the tranny from a friend, it was originally in a mid-80's Caprice I think. I am using the lockup wiring harness from bowtie overdrives (one that uses the brake light switch). My question is how do I use a pressure gauge to properly set up the TV cable? I thought about using BTO's TV made EZ, but I plan on going from carb to TBI in the near future and I don't want to buy 2 of them. I am fairly mechanically inclined, I just need a procedure to follow.

Going to TBI you won't need the BTO kit anyway as the GM throttle body will have correct geometry.

First of all you need to be sure your carb has proper geometry for now.

See here:

Once you get the cable hooked up, adjusted per the factory procedure and a pressure gauge installed you can go drive.

What you MUST see no matter what you do is an instant pressure rise anytime the throttle cable moves, even if only slightly, the gauge should show a rise.

You want to see 75-90 psi at idle minimum TV.

No more than 90 psi or you will have odd issues like 2nd gear starts, etc.

Instant pressure rise...
If you have that the trans is usually pretty safe.
Often with the GM adjustment procedure and any type of VB kit you will have to "loosen" the TV cable a couple of clicks and this is normal but be sure you have instant pressure rise.

Did I mention instant pressure rise on throttle movement?
