200-4R for a Streetrod

I am building a 56 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup for mostly street driving, occasional strip runs. It will have a 350/375 hp S.B. Posi rear with 4 bar suspension, fairly large rear tires. The friend helping me is pushing to use a 200-4R tranny, says it is better than a 700R4 and will hold up to this combo?
What is the groups idea's?

They are sure better in the gear ratio area for a heavier car. And they can be made to hold a lot of power with not too many expensive modifications. One should handle a 375hp SBC just fine. I am running one in my '53 Chevy pickup behind a hot 235 straight 6.

If you can find one out of a Buick GN, Hurst Olds 442, or Chevy MCSS those are the best. Other models will work but may not hold up to any abuse in stock form. My Buick GN powered S-10 has a stock 200R4 with only a shift kit and 0.500" TV valve. It does 1.60 60 ft, 4 sec flat 0 - 60 and runs 12 flat in the quarter.

I don't know about the 200r4 as I run a 700r4 but these trucks are heavy so you'll need at least a 2200 stall converter.I run the 2300 stall corvette converter in my 58.I added the aftermarket valve that allows the converter to stay locked up through 3/4 throttle and it dramatical improved the highway driving.It wont down shift when giving it a little more gas on those short uphill sections of highway.I run a 500+ hp 427 and drive it every day it has been 2 years and no problems.I have run it hard down the strip and do burnouts at car shows.I hope you have as much fun with your as I have with mine.Also if you plan to drive it in traffic the disk brake conversion and sway bars are a must not an option.
