200 MPH road warrior

Have any of you wondered what it would take to hit 200 MPH on a long straight stretch of road (ie prairies)? I have heard opinions of super high gears, large cu in torque monster engine and a second generation Camaro or Firebird with rear spoiler. Apparently, funny things happen aerodynamically at 150 MPH. Any ideas. The 200 mph club is very exclusive.

A high revving engine, low gears, good suspension, excelent tires, air foils on body to hold it on ground.

After the run....a change of underwear

no kidding on the underwear, the fastest I've been on the highway was 110 - 120 (the needle was vibrating) many years ago and it was scary. A lot of things can go wrong. The biggest fear would be the frontend lifting doing a faster speed.

Fastest anybody I know at my department going is about 130. Maybe a little faster. That is with a cop crown victoria. Speedo goes to about 140 and they are calibrated. That is a big heavy car. Add some nitro and maybe a supercharger and it should be close. Then the tranny will grenade on you.

A few years ago car craft did a 200 MPH mustang with turbos or super chargers of some sort. I think it took ~700 horse power and I can't recall the gearing or much of the details. It was a five speed though.

LOL, no car is "SAFE" at 200mph.

The only fear I would have is tire failure. There are a lot of guys running faster than that. Have you heard of The Silver State Challenge? This is a race/time trials that is run twice a year in Nevada on an open highway 318 (it is legal). There are videos out there on this event. I have a friend that is building a car to attempt to run it. There are several classes.

Check out the website www.sscc.us If you can rent a video at your local video store I would suggest checking it out. I have seen one of the early videos (I think it was the first race), very interesting and some of the rules have changed since then.

depends on the car,
CART cars employs ground effects to keep them stuck to the road. In fact if you could get the CART car up to speed and flip the road over it would stay stuck to the road. Nascar cars have spoilers and air dams, they can hit 200 mph as well. You'll need to reinforce the windshield and remember that any small area of air leaking into the drivers area will cause a window to blow out. Also speed proportional steering would help to as well. You can get to 200 MPH with 8 cylinders and 6 gears but it's not cheap. It will need to be a high reving engine as well, the range of 9 to 10,000 rpm is not uncommon on Daytona and Talladega.

If your talking about 1/4 mile times then your looking at lots-0-horsepower and possibly nitrous. Personally I wouldn't want to attempt it in a regular car. They are just not up to the task. If your going to put that much money into trying to get to 200 then you might want to build a chassis to do the job.

Regards
Mark

pop.hot rodding this month or last has a flock of cars and a 30's truck that run the silverstate as well as at an oval track somewhere. they all have front spoilers/dams and rear spoilers as well. high gears as you can imagine, roll cage over like 150 mph, fire suit, extinguishers, very spendy engines. only a few are going over 200 tho. the classes are based on top speed i think and the race results are in average mph, meaning the fastest guy over the course wins. lots of cars in the 150mph range.. look out for cows. nevada is all open range. they have an open road race in texas as well somewhere

Fastest I have ever driven was 156 mph in a Jag. That speed was being pushed outta their 4.0L staight 6. Great top end outta that motor. It was quick however I would like to experience 200 at least once.

The new mercedes SLR is rated at 203mph I believe and its something like a 5.8 (maybe 5.0 im not sure) twin turbo and something like a 6 speed auto tranny. Not sure what kinda rear gears though.

If you goto Mercedes.com and goto their FUTURE section under MODELS its there.

Worth a look. Looks like they designed the rims draw in air for cooling the rotors.

On the salt is a little different than on a straight stretch of highway.

1. take $ 10K and head to your local suzuki dealer
2. buy a 2003 hayabusa
3. break in properly and add TRE chip mod
4. that will get you every bit as close to 200 mph in a street vehicle as you will ever want to go

I don't know about 200.
But I got my girls car up to 150.
That was with me, her, and my friend in it (around 650 lbs. of lard total).
It is a bone stock car, with an automatic transmission, no modifications whatsoever.
2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT (v6)
And I still had almost 3 grand left on the tach before redline, I just ran out of road.
I bet if it was just me in the car, with plenty of road, and I freed up the intake/exhaust I could get pretty darn close to 200.
