2000 F150 chip guard

I have a buddy with a 2000 F150 who needs some paint work on the lower edge of a few doors. There is a thick clear coating that is about 1" wide and runs the entire length of the doors on the bottom edge. Besides the painting he wants me to duplicate this factory chip guard. Most of my work is on old cars so what do you pros use for this? Thanks in advance.

They have a number of different ways to apply it, from a special gun to aerosols.

SEM is one of the best companies out there for stuff like this.

SEM Chip Guard Clear Aerosol - 39803

Here's one that applies with a heavier texture.

Sem Products 39793 Heavy Texture Chip Guard Aerosol - SEM-39793 - Automotive - Car Care & Detailing - Protectants

I have used these many times and to replicate the factory texture exactly is asking for a lot. But if you get one and do a few test sprays and even let it set up and put two coats you can get it close enough for your typical job.

yeah, if you use one that requires a gun mess with the air pressure and gun distance til you get the right texture to match. Those guns are pretty mickey mouse, or at least the economy guns are.

Thanks for the replies Martin and tech69. This chip guard is the no or light texture version. I'll give the SEM a try.

After looking at the data sheet it looks like this goes on before the clear coat and it can cause lifting. Any tips?
