Pros: Lots of power, fuel injection

Cons: Most aftermarket Big Block heads will not work on this engine. I've also heard of a few reliability problems but I think those are isolated events.

The heads and intake are entirely different from previous big block design. I do not know of any aftermkt carburetor intakes made for these.

Listen to him. The heads (and especially the ports) are COMPLETELY different from those of earlier BBCs. Perfectly good motor for a truck if you want to keep the stock EFI.

On a related note to BOBCRMAN, do you have any experience swapping one of the 8.1 motors in place of a 7.4? My 99 (old body) truck with 7.4 is ready for a new motor. Any chance the 8.1 could be made to run with the stock 99 computer? I would assume the injectors would need to be upsized to account for the displacement difference - or am I being too optimistic?

JOE, I doubt that the swap would be economical. The electronics/injection are different. The 8.1 is also a tall deck design.

All that electrical BS(ya know that new fangled EFI) is actually something i think you could appreciate, as far as fuel econ goes(either way i don't think it will be great). Not to mention reliability and power.
