2004r slurrs from 1-2

My tranny has been slurring during the 1-2 shift for a couple of months now (only driven occasionally) It is a BTO 2004r. I change the fluid? and filter every april and had a flush and fill done on it last year. Today I discovered that the only time I had taken my truck to a "professional" they left the seal on the old filter in the tranny when they installed the new one. Could this have caused my problem? What am I looking at as far as damage/repair?

It's never good when this happens. Oil pump starvation ensues and the trans will suffer...
