2006 Chevy Avalanche 4x4 - Engine Sputters/Shuts Down After Warming Up
Hi All,
This question is regarding a truck for a friend of mine. Its a 2006 Chevy Avalanche with a 5.3 Flex Fuel with 69,000 miles on the odometer. The truck was recently started and driven on a 4-mile round trip, when the engine began making a clanking noise and then shut down. The truck continues to do this repeatedly every time after a cold start. Its is started and, as soon as it warms up, it sputters and shuts down. It has not been driven since the first time it shut down. So far, only the oil pump sensor has been replaced. A backyard mechanic believes it might be a clogged a oil pump screen or a bad bearing, for which he is quoting at a $4,000 rebuild. My friend is stumped at this point and is on a limited budget. I decided to ask on his behalf and get an opinion from the members here to help him out. If more details are needed, please let me know and I will ask him and report back. Thank you in advance! Does the oil pressure drop when it warms up?

To my understanding - and this may not be correct - the oil pressure seemed to be fine but the gauge would bounce up and down from time to time due to a faulty sensor, which has now been replaced. Should I ask ask him to fire it up with the new sensor now installed, and keep and eye on the oil gauge, or would that possibly risk further damage?
EDIT: He says the pressure stay a little above 80 psi. Also, the truck was just hooked up to the computer and it says crankshaft position sensor. Last edited by lt1silverhawk; 08-09-2012 at 05:59 PM. |

Thanks bigdog. I told him to replace that crankshaft sensor as you suggested. He took care of it today and says the truck seems to be running perfectly now. Thanks!
