200R tranny ID

I've checked some of the archives but this may be a real stupid question but here goes. I haven't seen it yet so it may be a real obvious answer. How can you identify the computer vs non computer 200r trans from one another I'm thinking of buying one but wasn't sure what to look for the guy doesn't know what it came out of other than it's supposed to be an operable trans. from something in the mid 80's he only wants 150 for it but I need a non computer version for my project.
Thanks for any help, Eric

If it's a 200-4r there should be a tag/label on the top of the bell housing with a 3 digit code.the 2 best 200's are the ones out of Turbo regals and monte ss's
Heres a list of codes

I don't think there ever was a computer controlled 200R4. All had converter lockup and a 3rd gear switch, some had a 4th gear switch, but those switches are only to help control the lockup, which could be done with a manual switch (cheap) or a box from TCI, B&M, etc ($175 or so).

That's correct. All 200-4R transmission are fully mechanical for shifting. The computer only controls converter lockup and you can get an aftermarket kit to replace that. You DO need to hook up the throttle valve cable. This is sort of a mechanical throttle position sensor and the throttle valve replaces the function of both the kickdown and the vacuum modulator on older TH350 and TH400 transmissions. Adjustment of the throttle valve cable is important for proper shifting of the trans.
