203 transfer case questions

alright as some of you might know i just recently baught a k-5 blazer it has a th350 with a 203 transfer case but it was originally equipped with the 700r4 and 208 transfer case. the truck came with out a gear shifter and the little cover that tells ya what gear your in

it has the little cover in the truck but that was the old one i'm guessing since i found it under the front seat, but this cover says all the way forward is 2H then back one is neutral then the 4H and all the way back is 4L (i think, i might of got the 4H & 4L backwards)

anywho when i was "test driving" it out in the woods i hit a NASTY hole and i guess it was in 2H since the front tires wouldn't spin so i pushed that little bitty nuby lever coming from the transfer case thru the floor board all the way forward and those front tires lit up like no tomorow and started throwing big black rooster tails all over the place.

now don't get me wrong it was freaking AWESOME!! but what is the gear pattern for the 203 transfer case?

also how can i tell the difference between the 205 and 203 transfer case? this hillbilly that was out in the woods said it's a 205 and not a 203, but the guy i baught it from said it's a 203

is there anyway i can just stick my head up there and tell? also which ones better? or is there a difference?

They quit putting the 205s in Blazers long before yours. They'll have a three bolt cover right smack in the middle of the back side of the housing. Unlike the 203s and 208s, the 205 is a gear driven transfer case and the cover is for the idler gear shaft. The 203s have a 2.01:1 low range, the 205s have a 1.96:1 low range and the 208s have a 2.61:1 low range.

What year did you say your Blazer was again? All three were found under Blazers at one time or another.

Not sure what transfer case in my chevy truck but all the way forward is
4L lock, then Nuetral, then 4W, then 4H lock, is the 203 full time 4x4 if not then it should shift as (front) 4L,4h, N,2H (back)at least in my mind which is pretty empty sometimes.

1984, but it was originally equipped with the 208....well thats what i was told anyway

Look for that three bolt cover on the back of the case...I dont know about the others but the 205 in mine also has a cast iron housing.

when it's in 2h the front driveshaft shouldn't spin......right?

see the other day i had it all the way back or close to it (it's hard to tell w/o the cover) and moved it around and the front driveshaft still spun as i was driving so i crawled under it and was able to spin the driveshaft by hand. so that means it was in 2h right? b/c when i push that little lever all the forward i can't spin the front driveshaft by hand no more so that means in locked in, but i thaught when it was in 2h the front driveshaft shouldn't spin

or maybe i'm just a retard since i'm new at this 4x4 stuff either way i love it

The NP203 is a full-time 4WD transfer case. The shift pattern (from the dash to the seat) is Lo-Lock, Lo, Neutral, High, and High Lock. High is used for normal driving. The 203 has an internal differential similar to an axle that allows driving on hard pavement (so the front and rear driveshafts can turn at different speeds). The Lo-lock and Hi-lock positions are used to lock out the differential for positive power to both the front and rear axle. You can shift between Hi & Hi-Lock and Lo & Lo-Lock on the fly. To switch ranges you have to stop and preferably put the transmission in neutral.

The only downside I have found with the 203 is that the shift linkage is a bit clunky, and sometimes it is hard to tell what gear position you are in. Also, it was not uncommon for folks to modify the 203 to part-time 4WD to improve gas mileage, in which case the shift pattern I mentioned above would not apply.

Any of the 205s I've seen (including mine) have been all cast iron with the exception of the yoke housings and the lower cover. Those are aluminum.

203 is full-time with an open or locking differential in the transfer case that os open in 4H or 4L and locked during 4H Lock and 4L Lock. That means in 4H and 4L, your front driveshaft turns (full-time 4wD), but the open diff. in the transfer case will stop the truck if even one tire on the vehicle loses traction (this assumes no posi trac or lockers exist). In 4H Lock or 4L Lock, it is like a 'normal' 4wD and broth driveshafts are locked together. This is from a 1978 Suburban I had anyway. The positions I remember are starting forward: 4H Lock, 4H, Neutral (power take-off position), 4L, 4L lock.
