Freeing up the exhaust is critical-
Get as set of long tube headers and dual exhaust on it w/low restriction turbo-style mufflers. This will be reused w/any other SBC engine you may choose to run in the future- Vortec included.

Freeing up the exhaust like that WILL give you more of an aggressive idle, and you'll be able to hear that overlap.

Exhaust is extra critical on that cam because of the single pattern and tight LSA. I'd get some 1 5/8" long tube headers and then see how you like it. If that's still not enough go to a single 3" exhaust. You will notice a big power increase when you free up the exhaust and retune it. I wouldn't be surprised to see 30hp.

I would think with the breathing freed up it should idle with a great sound. Here's a clip with the same cam in a basically stock Goodwrench 350.

305

If your compression is under the mid 9"s even with that 106 lsa you won't sound like you have a lot of overlap and sure will lose bottom end a real vacumn killer.
