I am getting ready to start on a '28 Model A. If I convert the stock rearend to open driveline will it live behind a mild 283? Do I need to install a recessed firewall to install the 283? Thanks

I would put a later rear in it. Alot simpler than trying to make the 28 one work.
A friend put a small block Chevy in his 26 Ford. He had to recess it into the firewall quite a bit.

As to recessing the firewall; no if you set the engine forward and don't use a large cap HEI.

I have a 350 (same outside dimentions as your 283) in my '28 with the large cap HEI. Firewall is recessed 5". Engine is mounted too low to run a stock fan, so I am running an electric puller fan. Cools fine with the fan running all the time (not thermostatically controlled) and a Walker heavy duty radiator. 180 degree thermostat.

As to the stock Model 'A' rear; FORGET IT !!!. I ran one behind a slightly warmed over flathead many years ago. Tore the spider gears out of it easily. The Model 'A' rear was designed for 40 Horsepower.

I have a 28 rat rod and the firewall remained the same, but the individual who dropped the 283 mill in the car stretched the engine compartment a bit--it is about 1/2 inch too long for a standard 28 hood.

The rearend is from a 55 Chevrolet. Works well with a TH350.

The 8.5 inch rear out of an S10 is very close to the same width as your '28. Scrounge one of those and change over the mounts.

Can I ask if you plan to use the transverse rear spring?
