As to recessing the firewall; no if you set the engine forward and don't use a large cap HEI.
I have a 350 (same outside dimentions as your 283) in my '28 with the large cap HEI. Firewall is recessed 5". Engine is mounted too low to run a stock fan, so I am running an electric puller fan. Cools fine with the fan running all the time (not thermostatically controlled) and a Walker heavy duty radiator. 180 degree thermostat.
As to the stock Model 'A' rear;
FORGET IT !!!. I ran one behind a slightly warmed over flathead many years ago. Tore the spider gears out of it easily. The Model 'A' rear was designed for 40 Horsepower.
