28 vs 31 spline axles

How much difference,strength wise,is there between the 28 & 31 spline axles for the 9 inch Ford rearend ? Is there a measureable difference in the diameter of the 2 axles ? Can anyone post a side by side comparison picture of the 2 ?

MOST 28 splines are tapered and MOST 31 splines are not.
Every time someone comes up with a hard and fast rule ... someone else finds a exception ...

31 splines are definitely stronger ... and Ford came out with them in the early 60's when the 406 and 427 equipped big full sized Fords had trouble and were breaking the 28 spline ones. I have read that the 31 splines are 30 per cent stronger ... ( original Ford axles ) ... and that the after market 31 splines are even stronger ( due to metallurgy improvements and materials ).

I ran some Ford 31 splines in my BBC powered 69 Nova years ago ( late 60's and the early 70's ) and I actually twisted the splines almost 1 spline without them breaking. This was a 3,000 pound car, 4 speed, 10 to 11 inch slicks and BBC making well over 600 horsepower leaving the starting line @ 4 to 5 grand ...

Summers Brothers axles cured that ...

28 vs 31 spline axles

Thanks Deuce,mine look a little like both of those,no big taper like in the bottom picture.

They should hold a good bit of power ...

Clutch equipped cars, heavier cars, Big Block Cars ... tend to have more problems than the lighter, automatic cars. I have the 31 spline axles under both my 32 Fords ... but only because I have a good many 31 spline center sections and parts left over from my old racing days.

On street tires ... @ 2200 to 2400 pounds with SBC's and automatics ... my 32's would ... never ... have to worry about breaking a 28 spline axle ... the 31 splines are just overkill ...
