283!
Hey all. I have a 283 casting 3849852. I haven't checked the production date yet as I only picked it up yesterday. I want to find out what the stock numbers are on it. (HP/torque) It came from a truck and has a two barrel on it right now. I will be swapping out for a stock dual plane 4 bbl intake immediately. I know you can't give me numbers without more information but I wondered if you can point me in the direction of a site that I can get that info from when I do get the rest of the codes

casting......CI....Years....Main bolts
3849852....283...57-66...2 www.mortec.com When you change the intake make sure that you find out a way to ventilate the crankcase that doesn't involve that big can in the lifter valley. If your motor has it. My 57 Belair has the 283 and I put an aftermarket weiand dual plane on it I had to plug off the big tube that runs down the back of the motor and try to find valve covers with vents in them so I could run a PCV system. Nobody makes valve covers with vents for the 283 with offset valve cover mounting bolt holes (for a reasonable price anyway). It would have been just a little more expensive to put some camelback heads on the thing. |

Thanks for the quick reply! I guess I am not familiar with the big can in the lifter valley? I know I have to replace the valve covers as I need a way to pour the oil in! I will make sure whatever I come up with has pcv valve in it. If nothing else I am fairly sure that I could put some aftermarket PCV valves into the covers. This is a circle track application and so it doesn't need to be pretty!

Oh, ok. You probably don't even need to run a PCV on a race motor I just know that you can start to lose gaskets after awhile on the street. Yeah, just check and see if the valve cover bolt holes are right across from each other or if they closer together on top than on the bottom. If they are closer you will have a tough time finding valve covers with a vent hole but there is nothing saying that you can't cut one! Just make sure they are not worth a bunch of money on ebay first.
Good Luck |
